San Francisco has a long and
interesting history when it comes to the subject of gay baths.
Nobody can say exactly when the first gay bath house appeared on the San
Francisco scene, but we know that gays have been frequenting the tubs in
the Bay Area since at least the 1800s. By the 1920s some of San
Francisco's baths had evolved into predominantly gay venues. One popular
place, known as Jack's Baths on Post Street, was popular on Friday and Saturday
nights. One man who frequented Jack's during the 1930s claimed that the
bathhouse was mobbed one evening when "someone spread the rumor
that the U.C. football team came over from Berkeley..."
During the 1970s over a dozen
gay bath houses operated in San Francisco. Today, however, there
are only 2 gay bathhouses in the Bay Area. There are also a number
of gay sex clubs.
